When I was in the 9th grade, I heard about a teacher. His name was Mr. Samuel. He taught 12th grade philosophy, and his classroom was plastered with movie posters and full cardboard stand ups of superheroes. I remember being disappointed that it would be another three years before I would have a chance to take his class.
THEN I FOUND OUT THAT MR. SAMUEL RAN A NON-CREDIT WRITING COURSE IN HIS BASEMENT ON WEDNESDAY NIGHTS.
Together we sat; students from the 9th grade, to graduate students from the University of Toronto. Together we read Shakespeare, discussed political philosophy, and learned what it meant to be a human being.
Enter, The Grammaticus: Academy of Philosophy & Innovation. Founded by Stefan Samuel over 10 years ago, The Grammaticus aims to cultivate philosophy and innovation and bridge the gap between the liberal arts and business.
The above quote snippet is from fellow entrepreneur Johnson Fung. Like myself, Johnson was a former student of the wonderful environment that Stefan Samuel had created. Johnson, having just recently graduated from Stanford’s School of Business (at the time of writing this) with a Master of Education, is taking the lead in evolving The Grammaticus into a fully fledged and accredited school.
The Grammaticus has a special place in my heart. Just less than a decade ago I attended Stefan’s classes. It wasn’t just any other place; it was a special place, full of imagination.
At the core of this driving force was Stefan. What he had done in completely manifesting his vision, was design and decorate his basement into a spaceship fantasy world. It was… well, everything you would imagine a spaceship to look like, equipped with advanced literature, an eclectic presence of space and time travel, mashed with the truly inspiring talks from Samuel. It was a unique perspective enhancing experience that I’ll hold with me forever, and an extremely hard experience to explain to others. Below are a few rare photos of the spaceship.
Throughout the years I’ve stayed in touch with Stefan, working on a few creative projects here and there focusing on his music career. Oh yea, I forgot to mention, he’s also a wonderfully enchanting musician, hockey coach, husband and father of four kids, and english & philosophy teacher as well!
JM Pro Creative is proud to be the official video producer for The Grammaticus’ indiegogo campaign. A crowdfunding campaign that aims to make the Grammaticus into a fully accredited high school program. With all the wonderful alumni and colleagues of Stefan and The Grammaticus, we managed to hit 50% of our $20k ask in just the first three days!!! It was pretty awesome to be a part of such a wonderful thing.
At the time of this writing we have just two weeks left in our campaign, and a little bit more money to raise. I’m proud to see The Grammaticus evolve and come to life. It was a long time ago that I attended, but I really hope it gets funded into an everyday thing. I only wish to see the great experience of The Grammaticus that I hold within, be also experienced by others!
